Dear Abby - Vintage Dogs at the Beach

Hi friends!

It is almost the 4th of July, so I thought I would share some pictures of dogs enjoying the beach!  These are all vintage advertisements.  I like them, and hope you will too.

This is a famous advertisement of a Cocker Spaniel and a little girl (1960's).  It advertises Coppertone suntan lotion.

The next two ads feature a Scottie dog and Westie advertising Black and White Scottish whiskey.

This handsome English bulldog advertises Four Roses Society.  (It looks like he is also having a picnic!)

This Kodak ad features a majestic Great Dane with a baby at the beach.

This 1950's advertisement, for Jantzen swimwear, also features a cute Beagle!

A little Poodle is enjoying the beach in this Pepsi advertisement. 

This is the oldest of the advertisements  A little girl and a Jack Russell Terrier (or JRT mix) are watching a ship.  The ad is for Southern Pacific Steamships.

Dear Abby: Doggie Weight Loss

Dear Friends,

Thank you for coming back to visit this week.  It has been a chilly week here, but generally nice sunny weather, so I am not complaining.  

I'm sharing a couple of vintage dog food ads featuring dachshunds with you.  They directly relate to our theme today.

My cousin Mary sent a note last week: 

Dear Abby, I would like to ask your advice about Charlie, my fur-baby nephew. He is overweight and his doctor said he must lose weight so he'll be able to walk instead of waddle. The problem is, Charlie hollers REALLY LOUD when he thinks he should have food and He won't quit hollering until his mama feeds him. How should his mama help Charlie cut back on food? Charlie's cries upset the whole household. Do you have any suggestions that I could pass along? 

Dear Mary,

It sounds like Charlie is very smart, and he has learned how to get extra food when he wants it!  I like a smart pup.

I will share what has helped me with doggie weight loss.  I eat a weight management kibble (Momma will write you a note with more info).  Our vet approves of the food, and she suggested that the portions mentioned on the kibble packaging are much bigger than they actually should be.  She worked with my Momma on good portions for me.  I'm sure that Charlie's vet can do the same as well.

I have a small bowl of kibble every morning at breakfast, and another in the evening at dinner.  Momma measures it carefully with a measuring cup.  On top of the kibble I get "no salt" green beans.  These are just canned beans, drained and refrigerated.  They do not need to be cooked.  I get 2 teaspoons of "no salt" green beans on each bowl of food.  This helps me feel full.  And - the green beans are delicious!

I do get a small, all natural crunchy treat at lunch and at bedtime.  

It is the same every day - same meal times, same portions ... I am used to it, and it is a good routine.  And my weight is healthy and stable.  So consider this my healthy food testimonial.  :-)

Throwback Thursday - Vintage Christmas Baking Ads

If you read my blog often, you will know that I spend way too much time at Pinterest!  I love that site.  I am forever seeking - and finding! - great vintage images there.

I wanted to share a few fun vintage Christmas ads with you today.  They all feature retro baking.   Since I love all things vintage, retro food photos, and baking, these are terrific fun.

This ad features a Durkee's Candy Cane Cake (1956).  It's coconut, so I am predisposed to love it.

This 1941 Pillsbury ad features Frosted Christmas cookies:

Okay, I am now ready to go look for Durkee's Coconut (does this product still exist?!).   This 1950's ad features a Snowman Cake:

This Crisco ad features Christmas Cookies (and they look delicious!).

Dear Abby - Vintage Dachshund Advertisements

Dear Friends,

I hope you are having a good week!  My Momma has been busy with work this week and I have been busy helping her.  I am a great helper.

I wanted to share a few vintage dachshund ads with you today.  I have a few ads here from magazines, and also have digital ads as well -- I can't resist a vintage dachshund image.   (In truth, I love vintage dog ads in general!)

Dairy Queen - can you spot the dachshund?   (I hope he gets an ice cream cone!)

 Gaines Biscuits -- now this is great ad!  It involves dog treats.

 Pard dog food.  That dachshund is glad to see her mother coming home with lots of dog food.

Red Heart dog food - "the only 3-flavor dog food"

A fashion advertisement (probably 1930's) featuring a dachshund -- and another doxie's face in the background:

 The 1955 Chrysler -- and it is raining.  There is something wrong with this picture!  Ask me what I think about rain.

General Tire - two beautiful red smooth doxies walking with a stylish couple:

Chevrolet - this is a close-up of the ad picture.   That doxie sees herself in the shiny clean car!

A glimpse at vintage ads for Bissell housecleaning toys

Hi all!

I had a nice email exchange with someone who is doing advertising for Bissell UK;  they are using some retro themed advertisements.  She said I could share these retro ads with you.

Both ads feature vintage housecleaning toys for girls.  Do you remember toys like this from your childhood?   I vividly remember cooking and cleaning toys from the 1960's.  The top ad is especially neat, as it features a grown-up Bissell with a matching toy set.  I love retro housewife ads, and think this is one is fun!

This is an older ad.  It features a Bissell toy for a little girl - and a fabulous dollhouse, too.
