My all time favorite books…

Man, this is a tough thing to answer, because I have so many. I know as soon as I finish writing my list, I’m going to come up with about twenty more that should have been on the list.

Okay, let’s give this a go.

Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice and Emma - Who can resist her wonderfully flawed heroines, or those delicious men she pairs them with?
Adam Bede by George Elliot – such a heart-wrenching story
Our Mutual Friend – Charles Dickens. Not his most well-known work, but I had to read it for my Literature degree and devoured it.
Being There – Jerzy Kosinsky, which I loved so much I went to find his other novels and loved The Painted Bird just as much.
I Know This Much to be True by Wally Lamb. Words to rip your heart out, and they did.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy- Douglas Adams. If you’ve read it, you’ll know why.
The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett.
All of L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables books.
The Dragon Riders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey. And most of the other series she wrote. I’ve read and reread, and reread again.
Georgette Heyers’ romances with a particular soft spot for Arabella.
The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Although I haven’t read the last one as it was written posthumously by another writer. Still good, but not the same
Just about every book Robin Hobb has written, but loved the Farseer Trilogy and then the Tawny Man series.
David Eddings, specifically The Belgariad and The Mallorean.
All the Daughter of the Empire books by Janny Wurtz and Raymond E. Feist

Fantasy is my favorite genre after romance, you might have guessed. As for romance, it gets even harder to choose. But let me mention a few that come to mind.

The Courtesan Chronicles by Claudia Dain
Faking It by Jennifer Crusie. Best failed sex scene you’ve ever read. Fall off the couch funny.
Blue-Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas. Hardy Cates *sigh*. And while I’m doing Lisa’s books. Let me add Devil in Winter, Lady Sophia’s Lover and Sugar Daddy.
The Charley Davidson Series by Darynda Jones. Epically funny, and Reyes is another of my book boyfriends.
Natural Born Charmer by Susan Elizabeth Phillips.
Catch of the Day by Kristan Higgins
A Duke of her Own by Eloisa James
Mystery Man and Motorcycle Man by Kristan Ashley

Time to stop, I know, but I could go on forever. The thing that draws me to a book and keeps me loving it, and often coming back to reread is great characters. Give me character with heart and substance and I’ll read anything.

I’d love to hear about your favorites. There is always space on my To Be Read pile for more.

A hot Canadian engineer, whose marriage proposal she accepted six short weeks after they first met. Together they’ve made homes in seven different cities across three different continents (and back again once or twice). Mimicking her globe trotting adventures, Sarah’s career path began as a gainfully employed actress, drifted into public relations, settled a moment in advertising, and eventually took root in the fertile soil of her first love, writing. She also moonlights as a wife and mother. She currently lives in Draper, Utah, with her teenage daughters, two Golden Retrievers and aforementioned husband. Part footloose buccaneer, part quixotic observer of life, Sarah’s restless heart is most content when reading or writing books.

Cover Reveal and Giveaway: America's First Daughter by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie

AMERICA'S FIRST DAUGHTER
Stephanie Dray & Laura Kamoie
Releasing March 1st, 2016
William Morrow
Historical Fiction

In a compelling, richly researched novel that draws from thousands of letters and original sources, bestselling authors Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie tell the fascinating, untold story of Thomas Jefferson’s eldest daughter, Martha “Patsy” Jefferson Randolph—a woman who kept the secrets of our most enigmatic founding father and shaped an American legacy.

From her earliest days, Martha “Patsy” Jefferson knows that though her father loves his family dearly, his devotion to his country runs deeper still. As Thomas Jefferson’s oldest daughter, she becomes his helpmate in the wake of her mother’s death, traveling with him when he becomes American minister to France. And it is in Paris, at the glittering court and among the first tumultuous days of revolution, that she learns of her father’s liaison with Sally Hemings, a slave girl her own age.

Patsy too has fallen in love—with her father’s protégé, William Short, a staunch abolitionist intent on a career in Europe. Heartbroken at having to decide between being William’s wife or a devoted daughter, she returns to Virginia with her father and marries a man of his choosing, raising eleven children of her own.

Yet as family secrets come to light during her father’s presidency, Patsy must again decide how much she will sacrifice to protect his reputation, in the process defining not just Jefferson’s political legacy, but that of the nation he founded.

Excerpt

She unlocked it and pulled it off the rack, the old 1940s Schwinn as sturdy as any modern bike, its oversized wicker basket roomy enough to carry groceries from the farmers’ market she loved to visit on Saturdays.
          Used to love to visit.
Now she planned to spend Saturdays closed away in Rose’s house until she decided what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. The life that she’d planned to spend with Lionel.
She climbed onto the bike, bunching the dress up around her thighs, the strap of the dainty little blue purse Lionel’s mother had loaned her tossed over her shoulder. The key to Rose’s house was inside. Otherwise she might have been tempted to throw the purse into the roadside ditch and leave it there.
If only she could do the same with the past thirty six hours.
Actually, she’d like to do it with the past five years. Toss them into a ditch, let them be covered by dirt and time until the only reminder that they’d ever been there was a tiny little lump of nothing.
Seeing as how she couldn’t do that, she started pedaling, her legs pumping, the poufy skirt shredding as it caught under the wheels and in the spokes of the old bike.
All that money down the drain.
          All that time.
All that commitment and trust and faith that things would work out.
          Gone!
          Just like that.
Hot tears burned behind her eyes, but she’d be darned if she was going to let them fall. Lionel didn’t deserve them. What he deserved was to be forgotten, and that was exactly what Apricot intended to do. She also planned to down a quarter-pound burger and an entire batch of homemade fries. Two things that she hadn’t eaten since Lionel had moved in three years ago. He believed in organic whole foods. Raw.
Apparently he did not believe in fidelity.
“Better to learn that before the vows than after,” she told herself. A magpie screamed a response. Rose would have said it was a sign of trouble. Apricot didn’t believe in signs and portents. She believed in hard work and integrity. She believed in doing her best and in treating people with respect. She believed in keeping the peace and compromising.
“And look where that got you,” she muttered.
This time, the magpie didn’t reply.
She pedaled like mad for ten minutes, then coasted down a small hill, her lungs burning, her ribs chafed from the built-in corset. She couldn’t wait to tear the dress off, toss it in the burn pile, and set a match to it. Couldn’t wait to send her family over to the condo to kick Lionel’s butt out, either.
Although, knowing them, they’d already been there, and he’d already been kicked to the curb.
          She still wasn’t going back.
          Not for a while.
