Throwback Thursday: School Filmstrips

When I was growing up, seeing the filmstrip projector out, or seeing a box of filmstrips in colorful plastic cases was always a sign that it would be a good day at school.  The filmstrips could be about history, science, or a book from English class ... but it always was a nice change of pace.  Some also came with a record that played during the film.

Do you remember filmstrips at school?  What are some memories you have of them?  I'd love to hear from you in the comments, below.

I had actually forgotten about filmstrips, so what a nice memory nudge. (I went to school in the 50's and 60's). In elementary school, Thursday mornings were "movie" days, (nature films, science info etc) and never once did the projector NOT break down.

Hi, thanks for your comment! I remember the projector breaking down on "movie" days at school too. I also remember the distinct sound the projector made when the film came to the end of the reel.

In grade 5, in 1975, our grade 5 class was allowed free run of the library across the hall to do project reports. I did my report on sonar and my best friend did his on radar. At the time, grade 5 was the highest grade at the school but only a few years before, the school had been K-12 so the library had lots of books and filmstrips for older students. I viewed 35mm filmstrips on a little viewer with narration from a tape cassette recorder/player. There was a beeping sound on the tape that was the signal to move the filmstrip to the next frame.

Laserblue, great memory of these filmstrips. I remember that little beeping sound to signal time to move through the filmstrip too.
