1958 Vintage Quickie Appetizers

I love vintage cookbooks. My favorites include mid-century "retro housewife" cookbooks, vintage baking, and vintage cookbooks for children.

I am listing a big stack of 1940's to 1950's vintage cookbooks today. One of my favorites in Good Housekeeping's Appetizer Book (1958). I love the retro food photography, the mid century living illustrations, and of course the recipes!

This cookbook has a number of "quickie" appetizer recipes to throw together in a hurry. Here are a few examples:

Stuffed Nuts: Put walnut or pecan halves together in pairs, with a generous filling of sharp-cheese spread.

Onion Toasties: Combine minced onion with an equal amount of mayonnaise; season with paprika, salt, pepper, Worcestershire. Spread over entire surface of each cracker. Broil until bubbly.

Potato Chips: Heat in oven; serve in basket. Or spread chips in shallow pan; sprinkle with grated Cheddar or Parmesan cheese; then broil lightly.

Peanut-Butter Toasties: Top each cracker with thin onion slice, dab of peanut butter, then dab of ketchup. Toast under broiler.

Cheese Popcorn, Home Style: In skillet, heat packaged popcorn with butter or margarine; then toss with grated Parmesan or Cheddar Cheese.
