My Review
The Melody of the Soul tells the story of Anna Zadok.  She is a Jewish Christian living in Prague in 1943.  After her parents and siblings are deported to a concentration camp, Anna lives with her grandmother.  Her one comfort is playing the violin.  Her beautiful playing catches the notice of a young officer, Horst, who lives in their building.  When Anna and her grandmother are threatened with deportation, Horst decides to do everything in his power to save them.

This is such a moving book.  Anna's story was heartbreaking, and the random horrors of the Nazi regime were so sad and frightening.  Anna is seen as a sensitive and talented person and she is a very sympathetic protagonist.

Horst is an interesting character.  He has been pushed into working with the Nazis, but he finds a strong moral conflict because of his faith and wants to work against the party to save Anna and other Jews at risk.

The Melody of the Soul is a well researched book with vivid historical details.  Some of the descriptions, especially of life in a concentration camp, are difficult to read.  However, I continued because I found inspiration in the strength of Anna and Horst's faith and I really wanted to see what would happen with their story.

This is the first in a new series called the Melody of Hope.  I recommend The Melody of the Soul for readers of historical fiction, and especially to anyone interested in World War II history.

Book Review - Christmas at Grey Sage by Phyllis Clark Nichols

My Review
Christmas at Grey Sage tells the story of Maude and Silas.  They live near Santa Fe, but usually go away for a quiet Christmas together.  This year an old friend convinces them to open their beautiful home as an inn.  An interesting and disparate group of travelers visits.  When a snow storm keeps everyone inside at the inn, lives are changed.

I found this book very intriguing from the first chapter.  It begins with a flashback to Christmas 1973, when Maude and Silas are making a special holiday for their little boy Elan.  But there is a mysterious reference:  "... there would only be nine more Christmases celebrated at Grey Sage" (p. 7).  This sets the tone of the book and provides foreshadowing about how these people's lives are going to change.

I always enjoy books that put a diverse group of people together, and that was an interesting aspect of Christmas at Grey Sage.  The visitors to the inn include "a retired military officer, an aging ballerina, a religion professor with his wife and a son who's recuperating from war injuries, a pharmacist and his music-teaching wife, a grieving widow who's a psycho-therapist, her daughter ..." (p. 14). 

I also loved the setting, with the inn suites named for artists, and the glimpses of life in Santa Fe.  (It made me want to visit the Southwest!)

As the story unfolds and we learn these characters' secrets, there is warmth, understanding, and genuine healing from the past.  Christmas at Grey Sage was a lovely read, and it would make a great Hallmark movie.  I recommend it to anyone looking for a sensitively told, unique Christmas story.

My Review
All readers have comfort books that they love and return to again and again.  Christy is one of those books for me.  I received a copy of this book from my parents long ago as a gift.  I was a young teen, and I read it over and over during my teen years.  When I heard that Christy was being re-released on its 50th anniversary, I was eager to re-read this favorite book again.

Christy tells the story of a young schoolteacher who leaves her home in Asheville, North Carolina to travel to the small mountain community of Cutter Gap.  There she teaches in a one room school, despite struggles from community members.  She also meets two very different men who interest her.  The book was inspired by Catherine Marshall's mother, Leonora Whitaker.

I love what the Marshall and LeSourd families write in the Forward to this book:

"The story of Christy ultimately presents this challenge:  Do I have the courage, the hope and the faith to step into my future - no matter where in the world that takes me?" (p. 14).  This is a lovely insight to the heart of this novel.

It was a delight to re-read this novel again after many years, and to visit Christy and the people of Cutter Gap.  Catherine Marshall was a gifted writer who especially excelled at creating a strong sense of place and vivid characters.  

This edition is lovely, and I especially liked the list of Characters and the two page map of Cutter Gap, Tennessee.  I think other readers will also find these book tools helpful as they read this long, rewarding novel.

I cannot recommend Christy highly enough for anyone who loves historical fiction, Christian fiction, or novels with strong and inspiring female characters.

My Review
The KJV Know The Word Study Bible is a wonderful Bible for anyone who wants to read the Bible regularly and really study it.   Readers can choose to go book by book, verse by verse, or topic by topic.  I really like the selections of topic by topic articles available.  For instance:

Note 2: Why Choose Love? (Col. 3:1 - 15)
Note 3: God's Love Poured Out (Rom. 5:5 - 10)

Each book of the Bible has a summary, a section on how to study that book, and Study the Book Highlights.  There are footnotes when needed and articles interspersed within the book.

This is the King James Version (KJV) translation, which I prefer.  I grew up with the KJV Bible and my first experiences memorizing and studying scripture were with the KJV translation.  This Bible features the words of Christ in red.

This Bible is well made with a dustjacket and cloth cover book.  The text is an average size font - could be a little bigger for ease of reading.

There are some useful sections at the end of the book, including Monies, Weights and Measures, a Concordance, and color maps.  The concordance is detailed and is especially helpful for reading and study.

I recommend the KJV Know the Word Study Bible to anyone who is interested in a closer reading of the Bible.  It is a beautifully made book and will be a big help on your journey.

Book Review - The Captain's Daughter by Jennifer Delamere

Book Synopsis

My Review
Rosalyn Bernay is on the run in 1879 London when she stumbles upon a unique opportunity -- to work backstage at a theater performing Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore.  This job leads to new friends, possible romance, and the chance to act onstage.  However, first she will need to escape her past ... and the people who pursue her.

The Captain's Daughter is the first book in the new London Beginnings trilogy.  This book focuses on Rosalyn, one of three sisters.  It looks like the other two books will focus on her sisters.  I enjoyed this novel and look forward to the upcoming books in this series as well.

The historical details are very interesting in this book.  I love Gilbert and Sullivan, so found the theater scenes particularly fun to read.  I loved reading about backstage life.

Rosalyn is a brave, admirable character.  She keeps her faith in the midst of danger and stress, and remembers it as she begins a new life in London.  I also liked Nate, a military man who recently returned from India.  His rapport with Rosalyn was delightful, and their scenes together were particularly strong. 

The Captain's Daughter was a strong beginning for a new series, and I think other fans of historical fiction will enjoy it as much as I did.  Recommended!

My Review
Nora Bradford is a genealogist who runs a historical village.  She meets John Lawson, a former Navy SEAL who wants to find his mother to find answers about a new health concern.  They seem like opposites, but find much in common through a growing friendship and shared faith.  John already has a girlfriend, and Nora is wary of relationships after a heartbreak three years ago.  Will they find a way to make romance happen?  

I loved this book!  Nora was a character that I truly liked - and related to.  She is the kind, smart middle sister in her family, unlike her creative and beautiful older and younger sisters.  I really liked the family dynamics in this book as well.

John is also such a strong and sympathetic character.  I admired him, and also really was pulling for romance between Nora and John!

I liked Nora's fascination for a Downton Abbey-ish series, and the way it played into the story.  I enjoyed the way the chapters ended with texts and Facebook messages.

I found the genealogy and mystery of John's mother very interesting as well.  I loved seeing Nora and John work together to solve the mystery as their connection deepened.

True to You is the first book in a new series, A Bradford Sisters Romance.  I am already looking forward to the next books in this series.  This was a delightful, well written novel with characters I really cared about.  I can't wait to read more!

Recommended for fans of women's fiction, contemporary romance, and Christian fiction.

My Review
When I first saw The Woman's Study Bible, I knew it was a very special Bible.  It is big and beautifully designed, with a lovely cloth floral cover.  The floral motif continues on the first few presentation pages, and at the top of each book of the Bible.

There are several special pages at the beginning of the Bible, including a Ketubah Marriage contract (traditional Jewish marriage contract), Family History to fill out, Special Family Memories, and page to list My Spiritual Mothers.

There are several articles about women and the Bible after the preface.  The contributors are women from diverse backgrounds.

This is truly a study Bible.  There is fascinating information to study at the beginning of each book of the Bible:  title, author, date, background, themes, outline.  Pages have footnotes with more information.  There are also short sections within each book of the Bible for more detailed reading.  For instance, in Genesis there are sections on Sarah, Hagar, Rebekah, Dinah, and more.

Between the Old and New Testaments there is a section with fascinating information like Flowers of the Bible, Vegetables of the Bible, Bitter Herbs of the Bible, etc.

The New Testament is red letter, with the words of Christ in red.  This is the NKJV (New King James Version) translation, which is very readable and also preserves a lot of the poetic language of the traditional KJV translation.  The font is 11 point, which I find easy to read.  The Bible lays flat as you open it, so you can set it on a desk or table and read it easily.

There is a substantial appendix including Money and Measurements of the Bible, Index, Concordance, and Maps.  I particularly like the Index, where you can look up people, places, or topics (i.e. Peter's Mother-in-Law, Pentecost, Prayer, Praise).

The Woman's Study Bible would be a perfect Bible for daily studies, and it also would be a really special gift.  I am very impressed with the beautiful quality of this book and the loving scholarship that is included for study.

Book Review and Giveaway - Trust My Heart by Carol J. Post

My Review 
Trust My Heart is a heartwarming small town novel.  It begins with Jami breaking up with her overbearing boyfriend and starting her career as a small town reporter.  Her work leads her to Grant, who has returned home to liquidate his grandparents' estate.  Jami wants to write about the estate, and sparks fly as the two get acquainted, and sort out what they are looking for individually ... and maybe together as well.

This is such a charming novel.  Trust My Heart has so many elements I love.  It has a small town setting in the Smoky Mountains.  There is an old, abandoned family mansion to explore.  It has truly likable, relatable characters in Jami and Grant.  It has a heartwarming romance.  And it even has two adorable rescued dachshunds!  It would make a perfect Hallmark movie. 

Trust My Heart was a perfect weekend read.  I enjoyed it so much that I am already sure I will reread it again in the future.   Make some cocoa, find a warm blanket, and curl up for a delightful visit with characters and a town you will enjoy.

My Review
 I had the pleasure of reviewing the first book in Sarah Sundin's Waves of Freedom series, Through Waters Deep, last year.   I've been eagerly awaiting this book, and it exceeded my expectations.

Anchor in the Storm is a lovely historical novel set during World War II.  It tells the story of Lillian Avery, a pharmacist in a time where women rarely held this job.  She is strong and resilient, and has worked hard to achieve all her life after a childhood accident left her an amputee with a prosthetic leg.

Lillian moves to Boston and finds friendship and sparks of romance with her brother's best friend, Ensign Arch Vandenberg.   When he notices a sedative problem on his ship, she realizes there may be a connection to sedatives (in large quantities) filled by her pharmacy.

The mystery in this novel is well done and kept me guessing until it began to unfold.

I loved the romance between Lillian and Arch as she learned to trust him, and as they both found greater happiness and faith. 

Historical fiction is my favorite genre, and the 1940's is my favorite historical setting.  The historical details in this book were beautifully done.  I found the 1940's pharmacy particularly interesting.

The first book in this series was one of my favorite reads from 2015, and I am sure this book will make my list in 2016.  I absolutely loved it, and am already looking forward to the next book in the series.  Very highly recommended for fans of historical fiction and inspirational reads.

A graduate of UC San Francisco School of Pharmacy, she works on call as a hospital pharmacist. My Review:

 

Through the Shadows is the third book in Karen Barnett's Golden Gate Chronicles.  It is set primarily in San Francisco in 1908, a couple of years after the earthquake, as the city was rebuilt.

 

This novel, like the previous books in the series, features the King family.  Elizabeth King is a former budding concert pianist who cut her career short after a complicated and unhappy relationship.  She finds herself in San Francisco, working at a Mission that helps save very young girls from brothels in Chinatown.

 

Her life and work also connect her to Charles McKinley, an idealistic young attorney who wants to make a difference in the lives of the community.

 

This is a sensitively told story dealing with issues that are very relevant today, like immigration and choosing love over fear.

 

Elizabeth and Charles are warm, sympathetic characters, and there are other great supporting characters like Donaldina (head of the Mission) and George (a friend from Chinatown) that readers will care a lot about, too.  It is wonderful to catch up with the rest of the King family (including Ruby's dachshund Otto!) in this book.

 

There is a strong Christian message of choosing to trust God's grace and accept his love for all people.

 

The historical details of San Francisco in the early 1900's are fascinating, and sure to interest fans of historical fiction.  I enjoyed this book, and recommend it to other readers.
