Throwback Thursday - Apple Core Necklaces

Apple core necklaces -- for some reason these were all the rage in the late 1970's.  Everyone wore them.   Fruit themed jewelry was popular with preteen and teen girls;  I'm not sure why.  It would be interesting to find a few Seventeen magazines from this vintage and look through them for trends like this.  Do you remember these necklaces?  This is one retro trend that I don't want to repeat.

Wow...I had completely forgotten about these necklaces. I do remember the girls wearing these when I was in school.

I had forgotten about them until recently too! They were very trendy in the 1970's. :-)

While I cannot speak for the rest of America (or anywhere else, for that matter), in the 1970's era San Francisco Bay Area, there was a very popular TV show, and one of the characters wore an applecore necklace. The show was called The Charley And Humphrey Good Stuff Hour. It starred 2 puppets: a horse named Charley Horse, who always wore boating attire, and a dog named Humphrey Hambone, who wore a sweatshirt with 2 necklaces: an applecore and a half-peeled orange.

Due to the popularity of the show (even adults watched), the necklaces became very popular. I was 13 when I bought mine. I still have it, and am wearing it even now!

Thanks, Casper! That is really interesting about the tie-in to the popular 1970's show. I had no idea!

I had one in the 70’s! It was on a leather “chain.” I wish I still had it! I was a bit chubby in fifth and sixth grade and one time my doctor pointed to the necklace and told me I should eat more of those (apples).

I still have mine! Also, probably part of the same trend, a mouse in cheese necklace.

I remember that mouse in cheese too! - Trish

I had one of these, I was in 4th grade. I had it until for some reason, it broke in half. Great 70's throwback!

Flo, great story! I remember these too.

I had a pair of small,1 inch earrings. They were on a hook and were my first pair of dangling earrings. 1970-71ish.

That is neat! And I remember what a big deal it was to have a first pair of dangly earrings. - Trish

They were even earlier than that - I clearly remember seeing apple core necklaces in 1974, when I was in the fifth grade. I thought they were so cool on the teenaged girls and I really wanted one.

MKB, that is just about the time that I had a necklace like this. Thanks for commenting!

I remember the big deal about the first pair of dangling earrings, too. In fact, I still have mine and wear them once in a while!
