Dear Abby - Happy Thanksgiving

Dear friends,

I hear that next week is Thanksgiving!  That means yummy food and the National Dog Show.  It also is a nice reminder to be thankful for good things in our lives.

Readers, I am thankful for YOU.  I have loved the wonderful stories and photos you have shared of your fur-kids in Rescue Spotlights and Pet Meet and Greet posts here.  I enjoy every single comment that you leave, especially the ones about your pets.

Thank you for visiting my blog and for loving animals and for supporting rescue!

Today I will just share a few vintage Thanksgiving images with you.  Above, you will see a girl eating turkey while her dachshund watches.  (He has a bone to chew on.)  It is a cover illustration of Calling All Girls magazine from the early 1960's.

Below you will find a vintage postcard showing two black and tan dachshunds meeting some turkeys.  I wonder how that went?!

This vintage Thanksgiving greeting card features two little puppies playing on a great big pumpkin.  That looks like fun!

This is another vintage greeting card (1940's).  It shows a little terrier dog actually riding on a turkey!

Thank you again for stopping by!  What are you thankful for this year?  If you have pets, do they get special treats on Thanksgiving?  I'd love to hear from you in the comments, below.

Love,

Abby xoxoxo

Daily Vintage - Baseball Boy Birthday Card

Welcome to my brand new blog feature!  I'm looking forward to sharing a vintage item with you every day.  Many of these will be from my shop, Birdhouse Books, but some may be from my own home, friends' collections, etc.   I am happy to be surrounded by friends and family who love all things vintage!

My first Daily Vintage offering is this cute vintage birthday card.  It features a little boy in a Cubs baseball uniform celebrating his 10th birthday.  A little girl in a beanie cap is eating popcorn and cheering him on, and her terrier dog joins in the fun.  Super cute!

Item of the Day: Anthropomorphic Train Valentine

This little die-cut vintage Valentine is especially cute!  It features a sad train engine and reads, "I"ll just give up, if you won't be mine!"   It is a Hallmark card, 1950's to 1960's vintage.  Anthropomorphic Valentines are among my favorites - they have such a unique vintage charm.   This little cutie is at Birdhouse Books (train card).  You'll find hundreds of more unique vintage Valentines in my store.

Photos of Vintage Valentines

I love, love, love these new additions to my store -- Vintage Valentines at Birdhouse Books.  Just had to share a few photos with you!

This mechanical card features a couple dancing the Tango.  Fun ballroom dance theme!   It is mechanical -- the woman's leg moves.   I would date this as 1930's, and it is fabulous!

An adorable little girl with dark hair in ringlets - probably 1930's vintage:

Sweet homemade card for teacher dated 1939 -- look at the tiny little envelope child has made on the front of the card:

1942 card with children riding an old fashioned teeter totter playground toy:

1942 card for teacher -- especially beautiful illustration showing children around the globe:

Again, all these cards - and more! - are at Birdhouse Books!

Baby Boomer Vintage Valentines

One of my favorite things to list is baby boomer Valentine cards for children.   These cards are die-cuts.  The colors are bright and crisp.  The children featured in these cards are typically participating in fun activities, and are often accompanied by cute cats or dogs.   I love the way these cards evoke an earlier time;  they are so sweet and nostalgic.  You'll find these cards, and more, here:  Vintage Valentines at Birdhouse Books

Vintage Whitney Made Valentines

1920's to 1930's vintage Whitney Made Valentines are so pretty, with a very distinctive look.  They have vivid colors, often featuring children (sometimes along with dolls, dogs, cats).  They are die-cut in various shapes (hearts, rectangles, octagons, squares).  They have an elaborate border design.  Inside the card you will find another little black and white illustration, with a short, sweet verse.  Some of the cards are marked Whitney Made on the back, and some have a second design on the back of the card.  These unique cards date from the 1920's to 1930's.  The company, founded by George C. Whitney, started in 1886 and went out of business in 1942 due to World War II paper shortages.  I have many Whitney Made cards in my store at Birdhouse Books.  I've included a few photos that you may enjoy!
