Book Review - The Highlander's Holiday Wife by Vanessa Kelly

My Review

The Highlander's Holiday Wife is the fifth book in the Clan Kendrick series. This is the story of Lady Samantha Penwith, who is looking for her husband's murderer -- when she unexpectedly meets Doctor Braden Kendrick on her quest.

I wanted to read this novel because I have enjoyed the earlier books in this series. The holiday setting was an extra bonus.

I think this may be my favorite book in the Clan Kendrick series.  I really like Samantha, who is so bright, independent, and determined. The sub-plot of her looking out for her late husband's much younger sister, who is deaf, was lovely and well written. And Samantha and Braden!  Braden is a wonderful book boyfriend - smart, strong, pragmatic, and infinitely kind.

I enjoyed the blend of romance and the mystery of what happened to Samantha's husband.  The author did a wonderful job of balancing the two storylines - and they certainly kept me up late reading to see what would happen next!

I recommend The Highlander's Holiday Wife, and the other books in this series (must be read in order!) to fans of historical romance, especially with a Scottish setting.

Book Review and Giveaway - The Other Side of Certain by Amy Willoughby-Burle

My Review

The Other Side of Certain is a historical novel set during the Depression. It is the story of Mattie Mobley, a young woman from a privileged background who dreamed of being a teacher - so she traveled from Asheville to a very rural part of Kentucky to start a one room school and become a Pack Horse Librarian. There is a mystery in Certain, Kentucky involving an abandoned church (now a library) and a widower who is exiled outside of town with his children. She is determined to learn the story ... especially after she meets the widower.

I wanted to read this novel because I was intrigued by the Depression era setting. I also loved the idea of Pack Horse Librarians!

This is just a lovely read.  I found myself immediately transported to another time and place by the author's storytelling, and felt like I was discovering the town of Certain just as Mattie was. I was very intrigued by the church-turned-school and the mystery of the broken church window there.

Daniel, the exiled widower, is a fascinating character and I loved his slowly unfolding connection with Mattie.

The author is a wonderful descriptive storyteller. I loved details like:

"Back in the church, I discovered that the pews did serve as bookshelves. Volumes of literature of all types were categorized along the rows, spine out or flat down for magazines and other things. “That’s clever,” I said, pointing to a bookend made from a license plate folded at a ninety-degree angle. I could see them all through the rows. “We make do,” Ava said, coming to stand beside me. “People send all sorts of things as donations. Nothing goes to waste.  When you don’t have much, much care is given to everything" (eBook location 195).

I highly recommend The Other Side of Certain to fans of historical fiction, and especially to anyone who is interested in 1930's America. This is the first in a new series, Love for Certain, and I look forward to reading more of this series in the future.

Book Review and Giveaway - Fair as a Star by Mimi Matthews

My Review
Fair as a Star is a historical novel set in a sleepy English village in 1864.  Beryl Burnham has just returned home from a year in Paris, and she is about to enter into a marriage of convenience with the area's most eligible bachelor, Henry Rivenhall.  Unfortunately, she has strong feelings for his brother, Mark, who is village curate.  As Beryl struggles with her feelings, she also deals with a feeling of shame about the melancholia that has been part of her life since she was young.

I wanted to read this novel because I love Mimi Matthews' books.  I was also intrigued by the title for this new series - Victorian Romantics.  In school I loved Victorian literature, so this definitely caught my interest.

I have to say that Fair as a Star is my favorite Mimi Matthews book yet!  I love the characters, especially Beryl, who is so sweet, sincere, and sometimes tentative.  Mark is one of the best book boyfriends I've "met" in recent years.  He is the polar opposite of Henry (who is so cool and unemotional) and even knows that Beryl's life would be better with a little dog!

The storytelling and romanticism are lovely.  For instance:

"His strong fingers brushed the bare nape of her neck. Soft. Tender. It was almost a caress. Enough to send a delicate shiver down Beryl’s spine. Mark must have felt it, too, for he quickly removed his hand. It seemed as though he might have said something more, but in that same instant, a gentle gust of wind caught his tall hat from the pile at his side. It tumbled down over the grassy slope of the riverbank, coming to a halt on a cluster of flowering weeds. He made no effort to chase it. She looked up at him in question. His expression turned wry. 

'There are few moments in a man’s existence when he experiences so much ludicrous distress as when he is in pursuit of his own hat.' 

A slow smile spread over her face. 'The Pickwick Club,' she said, temporarily diverted. 'I’m amazed you can recite it so readily.'" (Kindle position 662)

Sigh -- romance and Dickens quotes!

I only wish this relatively short book had lasted longer ... it was such a lovely read.  The love story was slow building and swooping at once.  There was some humor (i.e. the naughty but lovable little dog Ernest).  The author also deals sensitively with the social theme of depression during the Victorian era.

I cannot recommend Fair as a Star highly enough for fans of Victorian England, historical fiction, and beautifully written old fashioned love stories!

Book Review and Giveaway - The Woman in the Green Dress by Tea Cooper

My Review

The Woman in the Green Dress is a historical novel set in Sydney, Australia in 1853 and London - and then Sydney - in 1918.  It is the story of a mysterious woman in a green dress, a white kangaroo, an opal that is said to carry a curse, an unusual little curio shop, a botanist who falls in love, and a woman post-World War I who is desperatley trying to find out if her husband survived the war.

I wanted to read this novel because it sounded so unique. I have not read a lot of historical fiction set in Australia, and I was very inrigued by the setting. As someone who sells vintage items for a living, I was particularly curious about the curio shop.

This is a dual storyline novel. The 1918 storyline is about Fleur Richards, a British woman who has received unofficial word that her Australian husband died in World War I. She receives a sizable inheritance which she doesn't want to accept, so she travels to Sydney to learn the truth.

In Sydney the story flashes back to 1853, an Austrian botanist newly arrived and intrigued by a beautiful young woman who has made friends with a white kangaroo, the curio shop the girl's aunt runs, and an assortment of mysterious stories including a huge opal and an unusual curio shop.

Initially I was much more interested in Fleur's storyline and her search for her lost husband in 1918. The 1853 storyline was much more complex with many characters and locales and it took me longer to really become invested in that story.  Then, about halfway through the book, I suddenly found that story completely fascinating and just could not put the book down!

This is such an unusual book.  It combines mystery, romance, and topics like opals, the properties of arsenic, and taxidermy in the 1800's.  I have been thinking about it since I finished reading, something that I always consider a hallmark of a really exceptional read.

I recommend The Woman in the Green Dress for fans of historical fiction, for anyone interested in Australia, and for anyone looking for a unique glimpse at history that is rarely addressed in fiction.

Book Review and Giveaway - Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey by Abigail Wilson

My Review

Masquerade at Middlecrest is a historical novel set during the Regency period. Elizabeth is a young unmarried mother. She marries Lord Torrington in haste and goes to live at his estate. However, not all is as it appears at the manor.  Lord Torrington is a spy for the king, and there is murder and mischief afoot.  As Elizabeth gets to know her new husband, she also has to stay safe - and keep her young son, Isaac, out of danger.

I wanted to read Masquerade at Middlecrest because I love Regency fiction. The synopsis was appealing and the author was new to me.

What a fun read!  This novel combines Regency romance, a Gothic setting, and a mystery with adventure.  It is very fast paced and one of those "stay up past my bedtime" novels.

Elizabeth was a brave, resourceful, and intelligent heroine.  I admired her great care for her son and her willingness to look out for Lord Torrington's young adult children as well. She was also very smart. There was a secret code in the storyline and it was interesting watching her break the code.

Adrian (Lord Torrington) was a thoroughly dreamy hero!  He is strong, courageous, and just the right amount of vulnerable.  From the beginning I thought he and Elizabeth were a perfect match.

The storytelling is clever and the descriptions really add to the book. I enjoyed the Gothic elements, like:

"The air turned bitter that evening as a harsh storm billowed against Middlecrest’s thick walls, rattling the windows like an anxious prisoner terrified to escape. Though I fell into a fitful sleep early on, I was shaken awake by the wind’s persistent howl and the ravaging bursts of hard rain. I sat up in bed, darkness haunting every corner of my bedchamber. The fire had smoldered to ashes in the grate, and the obstinate chill of night had already crept over the floorboards and climbed the bedposts, intent on covering every inch of the room. I hugged the coverlet beneath my chin as lightning framed the window, illuminating the unseen for seconds at a time before plunging the room back into a black abyss" (Kindle location 2210). 

This is my first read by Abigail Wilson, and I look forward to reading her other novels. I recommend Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey for fans of historical fiction and Regency romance -- especially for anyone who also enjoys some Gothic and adventure elements.  This was a very enjoyable read!

Book Review and Giveaway - The Highlander's English Bride by Vanessa Kelly

My Review
The Highlander's English Bride is a historical romance set in 1822. It tells the story of Lady Sabrina Bell, who meets Graeme Kendrick by chance when he rescues her after a thief pushes her into the river. They are very different people, but are drawn together. There is some intrigue based on Sabrina's wealth and position in society and Graeme's adventurous and often dangerous work.

I wanted to read this novel because I read and enjoyed the last book in this series, The Highlander's Christmas Bride. This book is part of a series (Clan Kendrick Series) but I think it would work fine as a standalone read.

I really liked both Sabrina, who is a brave, independent protagonist, and Graeme, who works for the King's spymaster. They were well suited, and sparks certainly were there from their first meeting.

I also enjoyed the British and Scottish settings, and the element of adventure from Graeme's work. 

Some of the situations in the book are seem more modern, i.e. Graeme's words about Sabrina:  "Can't say as I blame the lass or wanting to avoid the marital state. If she's wealthy, what does he have to gain by marrying some toff who'll have the controlling of her?" (p. 34). This emphasis on women's autonomy (while perhaps less likely in the 1820's) added to my enjoyment of the storytelling.

The book is well written, with intriguing characters and terrific dialogue that really moves the story along.  I recommend The Highlander's English Bride for fans of historical romance.

Author Bio

Lillah Lawson has been writing since she was 8 years old, when she won a short story contest at her elementary school. The story was about a Princess who gets tired of waiting for the Prince to show up and saves herself. Once she saw her words printed in the local newspaper, she knew she wanted to be a writer.

Having written professionally as well as dabbling in poetry, children’s books and blogging, Lillah finally completed her first novel, Aroha, as part of a NaNoWriMo challenge in 2012.

She lives in Georgia, in the United States, with her partner and son and three rambunctious animals. She is currently working on another novel.

Diane C. McPhail is an artist, writer, and minister. In addition to holding an M.F.A., an M.A., and D.Min., she has studied at the University of Iowa distance learning and the Yale Writers’ Workshop, among others. Diane is a member of North Carolina Writers’ Network and the Historical Novel Society. She lives in Highlands, North Carolina, with her husband, and her dog, Pepper.
