Dear Abby -Summer Break!

Dear Friends,

I'm sorry I haven't been posting regularly lately.  I have been busy being lazy with summer.  My Momma and I are going to take a blogging break until after Labor Day.  I will be back then, and will get back on a regular schedule of posting here.  In the meantime, I plan to stay busy with some frosty treats and leisurely afternoons in air conditioning with a big fan right by my dog bed!

Have a great rest-of-the-summer!   Talk to you in September!

Love,
Abby xoxoxo

Summer Break

Hi all,

As Abby mentioned in her "Dear Abby" post last Friday, we are both planning to take a Summer-long break, but will return after Labor Day.

I have taken August off the past few years, but this is the longest break I have taken since I started blogging.  I want some down time to just relax for the Summer, but I also want to rethink some blog goals.

I am looking forward to a long stretch of reading.   When I was in my teens and 20's, I adored the Jalna series by Mazo de la Roche.  This is a family saga told in 16 books.  It is set in Canada between 1854 - 1954.  It is a big sweeping historical fiction series and reminds me a bit of Upstairs-Downstairs and Downton Abbey.   I have been waiting until I had a long, uninterrupted reading period to start this re-read.  I'm very excited to read these books again.

My best friend and I are also planning to rewatch the entire Mad Men series.   We both have the book Mad Men Carousel: The Complete Critical Companion, and plan to read that episode-by-episode as we go along.

Otherwise, I am sure there will be time for trying some new recipes, playing the guitar, and enjoying some time in the sunshine.  (I will still be working in my shops this Summer, and you can keep up with my work and vintage life on Facebook at my Birdhouse Books page.)   Of course, Abby will be helping with everything!

I look forward to catching up with you again in September!

Trish

Dear Abby - Linky and Summer Break

Dear Friends,

I am planning to take a Summer break from blogging!   My Momma will post a note here next week, and then we are off for the Summer.  I am hoping for a fun Summer, with lots of sunshine and time to relax.

I wanted to share a few of my favorite links from this year's blog posts with you.

I enjoyed looking at favorite dog movies.  A few of my favorites:
The Ugly Dachshund
Lady and the Tramp
One Hundred and One Dalmatians
The Wizard of Oz

Here is a glimpse of an exciting new Dachshund museum in Germany!

If you enjoy vintage dog imagery, you'll find some here:
Vintage Easter cards featuring dogs
Vintage dachshund Valentines

Close up from the Dairy Queen picture above -- that Dachshund is ready for her ice cream (and so am I!).

I hope you enjoy these links, and I hope you have a wonderful Summer!  I look forward to catching up with you again after Labor Day!

Love,

Abby xoxoxo

Music Monday - "Summer in the City" by The Lovin' Spoonful (1966)

If I ever get around to making my summer favorites playlist, "Summer in the City" will be in the mix.

"Summer in the City" is a 1960's oldies pop song by the Lovin' Spoonful.  It was written by John Sebastian, Steve Boone, and Mark Sebastian.  It really captures summer in the city -- starting with a VW Bug horn and ending with a jackhammer!   The lyrics include:

"Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirt and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city."

I found a fun video of the song that sets the music to an old Harold Lloyd silent movie called Speedy.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

What is your favorite summer song?   I'd love to hear from you in the comments, below.

Summer Changes at My Blog and Shops

Hi all!

It already feels like Summer here, with temps this week in the high 80's.  I like to change things up during the Summer months, and I'm excited about the changes Summer is bringing to my blog and shops.

I have some new daily blog themes (and some that remain the same):

Music Monday
Did You Know Tuesday
Wordless Wednesday
Throwback Thursday
Dear Abby (yes, my little dog finally gets her own day!)
Weekend Window Shopping With Birdhouse Books

I will also be pinning these new posts daily on Pinterest.  I am excited about some new days, and hope you'll join and comment.  Your comments make blogging even more fun!

I will still be doing some book related blog posts (especially with giveaways!) but am moving toward 2 - 3 days a week with those.

I'm also planning to spend more time this summer putting down vintage roots at some other sales venues.  In addition to listing a few eBay things at my shop daily, I will be listing new items daily at Etsy and Amazon.  I also will be refreshing my stores weekly at Bonanza and eCrater.

You can find my Birdhouse Books shops online:

eBay
Etsy
Amazon
Bonanza
eCrater

As always, I will be listing vintage children's books, holiday cards, and a few other vintage treasures as well.

Let's stay in touch this Summer!   Would love to hear from you in the comments, below.

Friday Fave: Almost Summer!

Happy Friday!

My Friday Fave this week is not a book or website or food or tv show.  It is a season:  Summer.

While I know that Summer technically begins on the Summer Solstice, it still feels like Summer for me from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  That was how Summer was defined in my childhood:  the break from school, the long leisurely days and weeks.

That sense of leisure is what I hope to enjoy this Summer.  This season will not be about travel or adventure, but about working hard (as always!) on weekdays and then unplugging and enjoying some leisure time in the evenings and weekends:  a good book, a long walk, a lazy afternoon, the pleasure of unplanned time.

How about you?  What do you plan this Summer?   I would love to hear from you in the comments section, below.
