Dear Abby - Vintage Dachshund Valentines

Dear Friends,

Next week is one of my favorite holidays, Valentine's Day!  I wanted to take the opportunity to wish you a happy Valentine's Day and to share a few vintage dachshund Valentines with you.

These are all older cards from the 1950's - 1960's like children exchanged in school.

This little dachshund wags her tail and mentions "a long long time."   (Lots of dachshund cards make a play on the word "long.")

 This is an elegant dachshund with a garland of red hearts:

 This cute dachshund is a dandy.  He is wearing a hat and coat!

This little girl dachshund looks so sweet in her coat and hat.  She is even carrying a pink rose!

This festive dachshund wears a hat with streamers:

"Valentine, you're really swell!"   

 "I'm longing for you, Valentine."

 "I've liked you a long time Valentine!"

"For you on Valentine's Day."  A little girl and her two dachshunds look at a note that is arriving through a letter slot in the door.

This little red dachshund is from a child to their teacher.

 "You're a dog-gone swell Valentine."

Dear Abby - Vintage Dachshund Valentines

Dear Friends,

Happy Friday!  I hear that it is going to be Valentine's Day, the day of love, in a few days.  (This is, of course, one of my favorite holidays since I am all about love!)

I thought you might enjoy a few vintage Dachshund Valentines today.  These are all old fashioned cards that children exchanged on Valentine's Day.

A little girl paints a special card while her Dachshund helps by holding a brush:

"Dog-gone it!  I sure would like to be-long to you!  Be My Valentine!"

A Dachshund shares a Valentine with a great big dog friend:  "Over you I'm simply dippy - ask me and I'll answer YIPPY!"

This Dachshund wears a red sweater and hat - and carries a heart.  "I long to see you.  Dog-gone it!"

This little Dachshund went to school with a little girl.  "For My Teacher - I Like You."

This Dachshund is surrounded by hearts.  "I LONG for you to be mine!"

"Doggone right - you're my Valentine!"   Now this is a very TALL Dachshund.

I hope you enjoyed seeing these vintage Valentines!  I also hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

Up and Away is also a 1963 school reader from the Reading for Meaning series.  It is meant to be read along with Jack and Janet.

I Read About God's Love is a 1962 vintage Basic Bible reader, Grade One:

This lovely embossed Christmas postcard is from 1911, made by A.S. Meneker.

This pretty, colorful Christmas postard is Arts and Crafts style, and it is Whitney Made.  (It's also one of my favorites this week!)

Who doesn't love an anthropomorphic Valentine?  This baseball theme card says: "Sock it to me, Valentine - be mine."

 This cute, unused vintage Valentine has a Humpty Dumpty theme:  "You make me FALL for you."

The cute Cocker Spaniel on this Valentine says:  "You're TOPS with a capital T - just the Valentine for me!"

A cute little boy in a sombrero peeks out of a multi-color basket on this Valentine card: "No use to hide."

Heidi by Johanna Spyri is a 1952 vintage children's book by Winston Pixie Books.  Hard to find in this hardcover edition!

The Phantom Tollbooth is a vintage children's book by Norman Juster.  This was made into a 1970 movie starring Butch Patrick a/k/a Eddie Munster from The Munsters.

Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There is an undated vintage book by Lewis Carroll.  It's a Junior Deluxe Edition, and quite a charming edition.

Daily Vintage - Mechanical Valentine, Showgirl on Elephant

This is a spectacular, big vintage mechanical Valentine.  It features a showgirl riding on an elephant.  She moves backwards and forwards.  "I wish I could wow you, my Valentine."  Found at Birdhouse Books: showgirl Valentine.

Daily Vintage - Unused Model T Valentine Card

This Mid-Century vintage Valentine is "For a Special Son," and it features a Model-T automobile.  It is unused and ready to send for a fun vintage surprise!  You'll find it at Birdhouse Books.

Daily Vintage - Whitney Made Valentine, Little Girl With Wreath of Daisies

Today's Daily Vintage is a lovely Whitney Made Valentine.  It features a little girl in a gingham dress.  She has a wreath of flowers around her neck and another on her head.  This would be so pretty in a little frame!  You'll find this sweet vintage Valentine at Birdhouse Books.

Daily Vintage - Mechanical Valentine by Charles Twelvetrees

This charming mechanical vintage Valentine has an illustration by Charles Twelvtrees.  It shows a little boy with a bouquet of flowers:  "Among the posies you will find - a special thing I have in mind."  This exceptional card is at Birdhouse Books.  I always love Twelvetrees illustrations!

Daily Vintage - Big Eyed Girl Valentine

Today's Daily Vintage is an easel-back Valentine.  The illustration is a big eyed girl with a plant growing hearts.  "Please pick mine, my Valentine."  There is no artist signature, but I believe this is by Grace Drayton, who designed the Campbell Kids.   You'll find this card at Birdhouse Books.

Vintage Valentines: A Picture Gallery

I have always loved vintage Valentines.  When I was a little girl, my family liked to antique together.  When we wandered through antique stores, I always looked at Valentines and holiday cards.   When I first heard of eBay, I browsed for vintage Dachshund Valentines.  And then I started selling.  I mostly sold vintage children's books at first, and then I added in vintage Valentines and vintage Christmas cards and ornaments.  I still love finding a big box of Valentines, scanning them, and listing them.  All of the cards pictured today are located in my stores:  eBay Valentines department, Etsy, and Bonanza. 

Here are a few of my latest vintage Valentines:

Three dogs in a barrel at sea.  This card is spectacular!  It is mechanical and the barrel rocks back and forth when you move it.

This heart-shaped card is 1920's vintage.  It features a little boy and girl under a big umbrella.  

 A sweet little bear has a plate of Valentine heart cookies.

Love this Mid-Century illustration of a girl in a fancy dress and hat.  "A Valentine for a Swell Sister."

Fun 1950's owl Valentine.  "Do I give a hoot for you, Valentine?"

Fun Mid-Century card for a husband -- includes several pages of illustrations:

 A cute kitten drinks an ice cream soda at a malt shop:

1920's or earlier card featuring a little girl with ringlets talking to a bird.  "I'm all of a twitter my Valentine."

This is an unusual mechanical Valentine!   The little girl's eyes open and close.  "Don't give me the shut-eye my Valentine."

A calico cat plays with yarn -- mechanical card.  (The cat's eyes move.)   "I love you and that's no yarn my Valentine!"

Fun Deco Valentine featuring a boy and girl fishing.  "If you're fishing for me use your heart as bait my Valentine."

This mechanical card features a dressed dog in a butcher shop chopping baloney.  The card is mechanical - his arm and the knife move.  "It's no baloney when I say I love you!"

I believe this older card is a Grace Drayton illustration.  It features a little girl with dumb bells who is exercising as her dog watches.  The card is mechanical -- the girl bends at the waist.  "I'm 'most reduced to tears, I'm so skeered I won't get the Valentine I want."

This mechanical card features a little girl in a flower hat that pulls up and down.  "Pansies tell what I can't conceal.  Look under my hat and see how I feel."

This is a fabulous mechanical card.  The little boy's arm and pig move back and forth.  "Tom, Tom the Piper's Son stole a pig one day - and as for you, your taking ways just steal my heart away!"

This is a lovely Charles Twelvetrees illustrated card.  It features a boy and girl on a toy horse:  "With your arms around me holding tight, we'll gallop on my hobby horse - 'cause love's in sight!  Be My Valentine."  The card has a honeycomb detail -- the horse's back folds out into a beautiful honeycomb.

Another Grace Drayton illustration.  (You will recognize her work from the Campbell soup kids.)   A boy and girl stand with an organ grinder and a monkey.  "Don't monkey with my heart - be my Valentine."  This is a mechanical card -- the boy's arm, the winding device, and the children's eyes all move.
