Book Review: The Knights Before Christmas by Joan Holub

Book Description:
'Twas December 24th, and three brave knights were just settling in for the night when out on the drawbridge, there arose such a clatter! The knights try everything to get rid of this unknown invader (Santa Claus!), a red and white knight with a fleet of dragons . . .
But nothing would stop
 their white-whiskered foe.
 No matter their efforts,
 he just would not go!
This parody of Clement Clarke Moore's well-known poem 'Twas the Night Before Christmas is kid-friendly, clever, and just plain silly.  Sure to become a holiday classic of a different kind!

My Review:
I am a fan of Joan Holub's books for children.  They are told with such good humor and such clever word play.  I knew The Knights Before Christmas would be another fun book for children, and it is!

This book is a parody of The Night Before Christmas, set in a medieval castle with knights.  It is bright and colorful, with great illustrations by Scott Magoon.

The humor is fresh and breezy.  What a fun book for a home or classroom read aloud!

To give an example of the humor:

"Silent Knight, in his nightie and iron-armored cap, was just settling in for a long winter's nap."  There is an illustration of the knight dreaming:  "I'm dreaming of a white javelin, just like the one I used to throw."

I enthusiastically recommend this cute and clever children's book for your Christmas collection.

About the Author:
Joan Holub is the author of 140+ books for children including the acclaimed picture books Little Red Writing, The Knights Before Christmas, and Mighty Dads, a New York Times bestseller. My Book Review

Readers of my blog will know that I am slightly dachshund-obsessed.  From the moment I saw the cover of Axel & Theo: My Dog is The Emperor of a Faraway Galaxy, I wanted to read this book.  The cover art even features a little boy and his red smooth dachshund buddy.

This is a charming read for children.  It will appeal to early readers as well as reluctant readers a bit older.  I think the reading range of 6 - 10 years is spot on.

Young readers will love the story of Theo, who escapes a bully with the help of his brave dachshund ... and then ventures to outer space on a great adventure with him.  Axel, the brave dachshund, is the emperor of planet Doglin.  Unfortunately, Doglin is being threatened by cats who want to rise to power.   How the boy and dachshund escape danger and emerge victorious is a fun read.

The book is very clever, with short chapters and dialogue that moves the story along.  Descriptions are creative and sure to appeal to a child.  For instance, on planet Doglin flowers smell like rib-eye steaks so they appeal to dogs, and the ocean is full of strawberry soda.

I would enthusiastically recommend this book to children who love fantasy adventure stories, and to adults who love dogs.  Five stars from me - and four paws up from my doggie friend Abby!

Excerpt From Chapter 20 ~ Between the Lines by Claudia Whitsitt
I’m lying on Grandma’s flowered carpet after breakfast on Saturday morning. She’s gone downstairs to have coffee with her landlady and pay the rent. I didn’t plan to write, but a tale comes fizzing out of me as I stare at the claw foot on her rose-colored sofa. I decide I’ll name my story “Grandmother’s Hope.”
Hope loved closets, and Grandmother’s closet won the prize for the best hideaway in the entire world. Running the length of an entire wall with two entrances—one from the living room, the other from the bedroom, she deemed the space a secret refuge. When she played in Grandmother’s closet, she pretended to be a grown-up, living on her own, in her own hidden tunnel. Huddled between the heavy coats, blankets, and crisply creased linens, she felt safe. Best of all, the entire wardrobe smelled of cedar. A hideaway, an escape, a haven.
Hope felt safest at Grandmother’s house. First of all, Grandmother paid close attention. In the morning after waking from a sleepover where Hope was the only visitor, she would lie in Grandmother’s bed and listen. Bacon crackled on the stove, and the aroma filled the air above the sizzling meat. Grandmother’s feet padded back and forth in the kitchen, clanking pots and pans. The percolator bubbled gently as the coffee brewed inside. Hope anticipated the perfect breakfast: sunny side up eggs, crunchy toast, crisp bacon, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and coffee. She wouldn’t drink the coffee, but the smell was comforting. It meant Grandmother was close by.

The illustrations in this book are bright and colorful.  They are sure to appeal to children, especially with the inclusion of a cute puppy dog named Sammy.  Colors are also incorporated in a very clever way.

Children will find this book a fun read, and they will also learn about colors and yoga poses!  Rachel's Day in the Garden would be a wonderful addition to a home or school library.

Book Review: Mini Myths - Brush Your Hair, Medusa! and Make a Wish, Midas!

Title: Brush Your Hair, Medusa! (Mini Myths) | Author: Joan Holub | Illustrator: Leslie Patricelli | Publication Date: March 24, 2015 | Publisher: Abrams Appleseed | Pages: 24 | Recommended Ages: 1 to 3

Summary:
Medusa refuses to care for her hair, her long locks getting messier with each passing page. Her hair rebellion elicits frozen expressions of shock from her family, but nothing will convince Medusa to brush. Only her hairdresser approaches Medusa with bravery and scissors, successfully solving the problem . . . with a short haircut! All are pleased with this drastic yet adorable solution. Leslie Patricelli’s depictions of this physical comedy bring a lively visual narrative to Joan Holub’s expertly focused text. Includes a summary of the original Medusa’s Wild Hair myth at the end.

My Review:
I love mythology, and think Brush Your Hair, Medusa! is such a clever, inventive way to introduce mythology to very young children.   Medusa in this story does not have hair twined with snakes;  her hair is a tangle of long curls.  Medusa is a cheerful, active child and she doesn't want to sit still to brush her hair.  The best solution that her father and grandmother come up with is to cut her hair short so it will be easier to brush.  Then there is the issue of brushing her teeth . . .

The storytelling in this book is clever and fun for a young child.  I love the first two pages:  "Medusa.  Hairbrush."  That sets up the storytelling in a way that will engage young readers.

The illustrations are exceptional - bright and colorful, sure to appeal to children.   The construction of this board book is wonderful - very sturdy and exceptionally well-made.

I would recommend this book highly for a home library or for a preschool classroom.

 Purchase “Brush Your Hair, Medusa!”

Title: Make a Wish, Midas! (Mini Myths) | Author: Joan Holub | Illustrator: Leslie Patricelli | Publication Date: March 24, 2015 | Publisher: Abrams Appleseed | Pages: 24 | Recommended Ages: 1 to 3

Summary:
Midas wants everything to be his favorite color – yellow! He chooses yellow clothes, eats yellow foods, and uses only the yellow paint at his art easel. But when he impulsively paints his beloved green Dinoboo, Midas discovers that too much of a good thing is a big mess! Joan Holub’s carefully crafted text is brought to life by Leslie Patricelli’s famously humorous illustrations. Includes a summary of the original Midas’ Golden Touch myth at the end.

Review:
Make a Wish, Midas! is a fun introduction to mythology for very young children.  The story begins simply:  "Midas"  (picture of Midas and his favorite toy).  "Yellow"  (picture of all the yellow things that Midas loves).  When Midas paints his toy Dinaboo (a green dinosaur) yellow, he realizes that not everything needs to be his favorite color . . . and some things are best just the way they are.

The storytelling in this picture book is so lively and clever.  Children will love to look at the pictures, and they will enjoy this as a read aloud.

The illustrations are colorful and fun;  young readers are sure to respond to this book.   This board book is unusually well made, sturdy and beautifully crafted.

This is a fun book with a great message . . . with a short version of the Midas myth on the last page of the book.   I recommend Make a Wish, Midas! highly for young children.
Purchase “Make a Wish, Midas!”

The Buzz

Book 1: "Well-written, fast-paced, and entirely appropriate for its target audience (middle grade fantasy), this short but succinct novel (novella? It was maybe a little between a novella and a novel) tells a delightful tale of a naive princess who learns the real meaning of freedom. Kirsten gives her characters a sufficient amount of depth to make them genuinely likeable, and she leaves room for much, much more to come." ~ 5 Star Review, Ally, Amazon
Book 1: "An inspiring thought provoking, and wonderfully written fairy tale by an author who transports us to a time in our imagination where everything is magical and possibilities are real." ~ 5 Star Review, kathyls, Amazon
Book 2: "Fairy tales are filled with knights and princesses and castles and a special magical feel that takes the reader far, far, away into another world, another place, another time. The Battle for Princess Madeline fits the bill to a tee! Author Kirstin Pulioff has created a special feel to the tale of Princess Madeline with her own special talent for using words to paint pictures in our minds." ~ 5 Star Review, Dii, Amazon
Book 2: "The story is well developed and easy to follow. The vivid scenes will transport young readers into the magical world of fairy tales with thrilling characters that have come to life. Another splendid read for young readers! I can hardly wait for a new book, Princess Madeline and the Dragon. " ~ 5 Star Review, Mrs. D., Amazon
Book 3: "The story is engaging on many levels, as is Pulioff's writing, but on this occasion I was mostly drawn into the action and the mystery as how to prevent the worst from happening. This is great entertainment and should do well across a wider age range." ~ 5 Star Review,ChristophFischerBooks, Amazon
Book 3: "Kirstin Pulioff has saved the best for last. 'Princess Madeline and the Dragon' is the final instalment in the 'Princess Madeline Trilogy'. I thought the first two books were finely wrought stories, but this novel surpasses its predecessors. Prophesies, family tragedies, magic and - of course - dragons, combine to produce a tale that is an instant classic. Written with a great deal of charm, 'Princess Madeline and the Dragon' will not disappoint Ms Pulioff's young fans. I look forward to seeing where next her imagination will take this natural storyteller. " ~ 5 Star Review, Diogenes, Amazon
