Throwback Thursday - Baton
Just seeing a photo of a baton makes me nostalgic for twirling. That's what we called it in the south when I was growing up: twirling. I took lessons during my elementary school years and loved it, practiced at home in the backyard. We didn't have majorettes at my small high school; if we had I am sure I would have wanted to continue twirling into my teens. As it is, batons make me remember long summer days, listening to my transistor radio and twirling in the backyard.
Oh the memories. I too took twirling during my elementary school years. I loved it. I was forever twirling as I walked through our house, in our yard & honestly, wherever & whenever I could :) Thanks for bringing back a great time in my life.. Carol L Lucky4750 (at) aol (dot) com
I never learned how to twirl, but I thought it looked so cool! I used to march around my backyard with my baton held high and pretended I was twirling. lol
Oh, yes. Baton twirling was in my blood. My mother was the head majorette at her high school, so when she found a place where twirling lessons were given, she signed my sister and me up. I still have my baton and every once in a while, I’ll get it out and do a few pinwheels. I have to admit, though, that catching a baton I have tossed is not always possible anymore. Now, when I see a parade, I look to see if there are twirlers. Nothing makes me happier than to see a majorette marching along and doing all kinds of tricks with her baton, but they are few and far between. Flag twirling seems to have taken baton twirlers place, not to mention dance teams. My older daughter throw the flag in her high school band, but it didn’t give me the thrill that a majorette does.
Diane, how neat that you and your Mom both twirled! And I agree with you about flag twirlers. I hadn't thought of it but you are absolutely right - far more of them than traditional majorettes in parades these days. - Trish

ReplyDeleteI never did, but my mom did drum corps and that's what she focused on! She still visits competitions for fun.

ReplyDeleteI twirled competitively during the 60’s and 70’s...great fun...hard work. Also twirled for my high school and college... not sure how it faded...

ReplyDeleteI got a baton for Christmas when I was 11, I’m 66 now. I always loved watching the baton twirlers and flag twirlers in school.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great memory -- that was a fun Christmas gift! I loved seeing the baton twirlers too. (I never achieved that level of expertise!)
