Throwback Thursday - Apple Core Necklaces

Apple core necklaces -- for some reason these were all the rage in the late 1970's.  Everyone wore them.   Fruit themed jewelry was popular with preteen and teen girls;  I'm not sure why.  It would be interesting to find a few Seventeen magazines from this vintage and look through them for trends like this.  Do you remember these necklaces?  This is one retro trend that I don't want to repeat.

  1. Wow...I had completely forgotten about these necklaces. I do remember the girls wearing these when I was in school.

  3. While I cannot speak for the rest of America (or anywhere else, for that matter), in the 1970's era San Francisco Bay Area, there was a very popular TV show, and one of the characters wore an applecore necklace. The show was called The Charley And Humphrey Good Stuff Hour. It starred 2 puppets: a horse named Charley Horse, who always wore boating attire, and a dog named Humphrey Hambone, who wore a sweatshirt with 2 necklaces: an applecore and a half-peeled orange.

Due to the popularity of the show (even adults watched), the necklaces became very popular. I was 13 when I bought mine. I still have it, and am wearing it even now!

  5. I had one in the 70’s! It was on a leather “chain.” I wish I still had it! I was a bit chubby in fifth and sixth grade and one time my doctor pointed to the necklace and told me I should eat more of those (apples).

  6. I still have mine! Also, probably part of the same trend, a mouse in cheese necklace.

  8. I had one of these, I was in 4th grade. I had it until for some reason, it broke in half. Great 70's throwback!

  10. I had a pair of small,1 inch earrings. They were on a hook and were my first pair of dangling earrings. 1970-71ish.

  14. They were even earlier than that - I clearly remember seeing apple core necklaces in 1974, when I was in the fifth grade. I thought they were so cool on the teenaged girls and I really wanted one.

  16. My mother had a signed apple core pendant she wore on a gold chain. I have it now, and I bought a long learher cord necklace to wear it on. I love it.
