Book Review and Giveaway - Murder in a Lavender Daze (An Aroma Wellness Mystery) by Daryl Wood Gerber

My Review

Emma Brennan owns the Aroma Wellness spa in Carmel, California.  She's planning a "Happily Divorced" party for a customer when that woman's mother is mysteriously murdered.  Emma works as an amateur detective to solve the mystery - even though this puts her in personal danger.

I wanted to read Murder in a Lavender Daze because I love cozy mysteries.  The Carmel setting and spa details sounded interesting.

I have read a number of Daryl Wood Gerber's mysteries, but somehow missed the first book in this series.  That said, I had no problem at all enjoying this mystery as a standalone read.  I was happy to see some familiar characters from the Fairy Garden series make brief appearances!

Emma is an interesting protagonist.  She's very dedicated to her work at the spa, providing wellness, mindful meditation, and calming techniques to her customers.  At the same time she has a talent for solving mysteries!  I like her detecting style, which includes constructing a murder board.

I enjoyed the other characters as well, including Emma's co-workers, her cousin Sierra, and her parents.  (And, of course, Emma's lovable cat Vivi!)

The mystery kept me guessing and Emma solved it before I could.  I liked the pacing of the book, with relatively short chapters and a good deal of dialogue.  The Halloween setting was a fun touch.

I recommend Murder in a Lavender Daze for other cozy mystery readers.  It's a fresh, clever mystery with a unique spa setting.

Book Synopsis

Emma Brennan always knew that her idyllic California hometown of Carmel-by-the-Sea would be the perfect place to open her very own spa. The success of her Aroma Wellness Spa, gift shop, and café has proved her right. But while the business is located in the Courtyard of Peace, Emma finds herself privy to events that are far from serene—like murder . . .

With its soothing décor and tempting treatments, customers are flocking to Aroma Wellness for more than just facials and massages. Lately, Emma has been booking private events, from spa parties to bridal showers and birthdays. Next on her calendar is something really unique: A “Happily Divorced” party.

After eight years of marriage, Addison Lacey is divorcing her husband, whom she claims convinced her he was Mr. Nice Guy when he was really Mr. Controlling Guy. To kick off her journey toward becoming a better version of herself, Addison wants to celebrate, bigtime. Her wealthy mother, Gianna, a former model turned difficult diva, is footing the bill. . . . But when Emma goes to Gianna’s home to pick up the final payment, she and Addison find her dead in her bed amid the aroma of lavender, with an herbal-infused pillow from the party nearby.

Soon, Addison is a prime suspect. But Emma knows there are plenty of others Gianna rubbed the wrong way, including her soon-to-be ex-son-in-law. Once again, with the help of her cousin, her nana, and her trusted Birman cat, Vivi, Emma is determined to sniff out a killer—whether the police like it or not . . .

Book Review and Giveaway - Sparks, S’mores, and Scandals: (A Taryn O’Kelly Mystery) by Michelle L. Clifton

My Review

Event planner Taryn O'Kelly is working on a reopening event for the local KOA in Silver Springs, Colorado.  Unfortunately, fires in the area postpone her plans - and endanger her community.  She works to solve the mystery of what is happening.  Her boyfriend Alex, ex-boyfriend Robert, and best friend Kandice are along for the ride.

I wanted to read this book because I love cozy mysteries.  I thought it would be about camping because of the cover art and the KOA description.  Camping didn't figure as prominently in the story as I anticipated, but it was still an enjoyable read.

This is my first read in the Taryn O'Kelly series.  It took me a little bit to get to know the characters, but I enjoyed the humorous dialogue between the Taryn, Alex, Robert, and Kandice -- and the adventures they got into, like sleuthing in the mud!  The humor in this book is refreshing and fun.

The mystery escalates and spreads, with more menace and danger as the book goes along.  I enjoyed sleuthing along with Taryn.

Sparks, S'mores, and Scandals is a fun, light mystery and I think cozy fans will enjoy this series.

Book Synopsis

Wildfires weren’t part of Taryn O’Kelly’s summer plans. Neither was arson.

When a string of suspicious wildfires erupts in the mountains, authorities clear out the KOA Campground and surrounding homes, forcing Taryn to postpone her long-planned summer kick-off picnic. As smoke drifts over town and neighbors settle in at the fairgrounds, unease spreads right along with it. Then an insurance adjuster goes missing, and rumors of arson begin to take hold.

Determined to protect her town and her livelihood, Taryn starts asking questions. Corporate land grabs, bitter zoning disputes, and simmering grudges point in several directions. Even Silver Springs’ resident prankster seems to know more than he is saying. But the deeper she digs, the clearer it becomes that someone is playing a dangerous game, and the fires may be only the beginning.

Set against the backdrop of a Colorado mountain summer, Sparks, S’mores, and Scandals blends small-town charm, wry humor, and heartfelt community spirit with a mystery that smolders long after the last ember fades.

Book Review - Happiness Included: Jan Brady and Beyond by Eve Plumb

My Review

Growing up, Friday night was my favorite TV night, with a lineup that included The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family.  I was the same age as the youngest Brady kids, so of course I found that show particularly interesting.  The Brady Bunch was an elementary school water cooler show -- we liked Jan and Marcia's groovy outfits, and debated whether Peter or Greg was cuter.

I love retro nostalgia, and have enjoyed reading previous Brady biographies by Barry Williams and Maureen McCormick, so of course I looked forward to Eve Plumb's book too.

This is a wonderful biography - a bit quieter and more introspective, but so thoughtful and well written.  I particularly enjoyed reading Eve's memories of The Brady Bunch.  They included passages like:

"In season 3 we were granted the go-ahead to increase the miles between the Stage 5 set and a remote location. The show was going to the Grand Canyon as the Brady family vacation. We were thrilled at the chance for a real adventure! It was my first time at the Grand Canyon. We arrived the evening before the first day of filming, and the dark abyss of the canyon at night, and the splay of brilliant stars like a dome from horizon to horizon, was both scary and breathtaking." (ebook location 1383).

Eve has a lifelong close friendship with Christopher Knight ("Peter"), the other Brady middle child.  She shares sweet memories of Florence Henderson (kind, bubbly, warm), Ann B. Davis (a consummate professional), and Robert Reed (who was like a second father to the Brady kids - even taking them all on a trip to London).

I didn't know much about Eve's personal background and found the stories about her parents interesting - especially her father's work in the music industry.  (He signed The Monkees as a recording act!)

There is no nightmare descent in this celebrity bio -- except for some typical teenage rebellion, Eve seems centered and happy ... especially focusing on her art.

I enjoyed Happiness Included and recommend this book to other readers who grew up with The Brady Bunch.  There were no photos included in the advanced reading copy, but I am assuming there must be pictures in the finished print/Kindle editions.

Book Review and Giveaway - A Scoop of Deceit (Coffee & Cream Café Mysteries) by Lena Gregory

My Review

On a pretty Spring day, Danika Delaney spends time with her mother at the local garden center.  They are enjoying their time - until a loud, unpleasant visitor to town named Sebastian Krane backs into their car.  He later files a lawsuit ... and then he turns up dead.  Dani works to solve the mystery and clear her mother's name, helped by her friends Gwen and Eli.

I wanted to read A Scoop of Deceit because I love cozy mysteries and enjoy this series.  I've read it since the first book and always look forward to the next installment.

This is one of my favorite books in the series.  It's fast paced, in terms of both action and dialogue.  We get to see Dani interact with her friends, Gwen and Eli, her mother, her extended family, her boyfriend Jake, and her ex-boyfriend who is a local firefighter.

As always the Coffee & Cream Cafe, a little ice cream and coffee place on Long Island, is lots of fun.  (Even though descriptions of the desserts always make me hungry!)

The mystery aspect of this book is well done, with several plausible suspects.  I enjoy following along with Dani's detecting.

I recommend A Scoop of Deceit, and this enjoyable series, for other cozy mystery fans.

Book Synopsis

From author Lena Gregory comes another decadently delightful cozy mystery …

Spring has finally sprung on the south shore of eastern Long Island, New York, and Danika Delaney is ready to take a break from running her old-fashioned malt shop, the Coffee & Cream Café, to help her mom start planting for the season. With visions of colorful tulips and delicate daffodils in mind, Danika and her mother browse through the local garden center, where they can’t help but notice a confrontation between out-of-towner Sebastian Krane and the local cashier. Unfortunately, as Krane storms off, aggravated and not paying attention, he hops into his BMW, and crashes right into Mrs. Delaney as she’s backing up in her borrowed pickup truck. As if that weren’t enough to put a damper on her sunny mood, Krane then has the nerve to file a lawsuit against her. But when Dani shows up at his mansion to try to straighten things out, she finds him dead, with a knife in his back. Apparently, someone had it out for Sebastian. Someone other than her mother. A fact Dani sets out to prove with the help of her sidekicks, Gwen and Eli, wading through a slew of shady suspects from the victim’s stormy past. Can Dani clear her mother’s name and find the truth behind Krane’s murder? Or will Dani be in danger of pushing up daisies herself this spring?

Book Review and Giveaway - Death at a Firefly Tea (A Tea Shop Mystery) by Laura Childs

My Review

Theodosia Browning is hosting an evening tea when one of the guests, Mrs. Van Cortland, dies suddenly.  Later it is revealed that she ingested drugs.  Theodosia begins quietly investigating what happened, and finds herself overwhelmed with potential suspects - and at jeopardy herself after someone throws a flash bang at Theo and her dog, Earl Grey, when they are out for an evening run.  Things escalate and her friend and tea sommelier Drayton is also in danger.

I wanted to read Death at a Firefly Tea because I love this series of books.  I was late to the series but jumped in mid-way and now I try to read them all as they are published.  I love the Charleston setting, the details about tea (and tea sets, china, etc.), and the character of Theo.

This was an especially fast paced entry in the series.  There are a number of suspects and the unexpected danger level also seems unusually high.  These elements made the mystery even more fun to read!

As always, I loved the details about the teas that Theo hosts, like the Queen Victoria Tea and a Moulin Rouge Tea.  I love the tea shop setting too, of course!

I recommend this book - and the series - for other cozy mystery readers, and especially for anyone who loves Charleston, Southern settings, and tea!

Book Synopsis

A brazen killer sparks Theodosia Browning’s sense of justice in this latest installment of the New York Times bestselling series.

As fireflies dazzle like tiny glowing lanterns, tea maven Theodosia hosts an elegant evening tea on the patio of the Tangled Rose B and B. But in this gentle darkness an intruder has made their way in and slipped deadly drugs into the baked Alaska of Mrs. Van Courtland, one of Charleston’s local grande dames. Shocked by this brazen act, urged on by Mrs. V’s grieving son, Theodosia begins her own shadow investigation. Soon, she finds herself at odds with a greedy developer, the questionable residents of Honey Badger House, a vengeful ex-daughter-in-law, ne’er do well relatives, and a housekeeper who knows all the secrets.

As Theodosia hosts a Moulin Rouge Tea and a Queen Victoria Tea, her tea sommelier Drayton is assaulted by a masked stranger and the fiancé of Mrs. V’s son is kidnapped. It’s only at the Starry Starry Night black tie ball that Theodosia stumbles upon the killer and gets pulled into a dramatic life and death chase.

In her previous life she was CEO/Creative Director of her own marketing firm and authored several screenplays. She is married to a professor of Chinese art history, loves to travel, rides horses, enjoys fundraising for various non-profits, and has two Chinese Shar-Pei dogs.

Laura specializes in cozy mysteries that have the pace of a thriller (a thrillzy!) Her three series are:

The Tea Shop Mysteries – set in the historic district of Charleston and featuring Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop. Theodosia is a savvy entrepreneur and pet mom to service dog Earl Grey. She’s also an intelligent, focused amateur sleuth who doesn’t rely on coincidences or inept police work to solve crimes. This charming series is highly atmospheric and rife with the history and mystery that is Charleston.

The Scrapbooking Mysteries – a slightly edgier series that takes place in New Orleans. The main character, Carmela, owns Memory Mine scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter and is forever getting into trouble with her friend, Ava, who owns the Juju Voodoo shop. New Orleans’ spooky above-ground cemeteries, jazz clubs, bayous, and Mardi Gras madness make their presence known here!

The Cackleberry Club Mysteries – set in Kindred, a fictional town in the Midwest. In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Eggs are the morning specialty here and this cozy cafe even offers a  book nook and yarn shop. Business is good but murder could lead to the cafe’s undoing! This series offers recipes, knitting, cake decorating, and a dash of spirituality.

Book Review - Heaven Meets Earth by Josh Nadeau

My Review

Heaven Meets Earth: A 40 Day Journey of Transformation Through the Nicene Creed is a unique devotional book.  It begins with the text of the Nicene Creed.  There are several short chapters about the history of this book, the Nicene Creed, and the role of art in devotional reading.  The author emphasizes the Lectio Divina and Visio Divina.

There are 40 days of devotions in this book.  Each has a beautiful illustration inspired by the Nicene Creed, a short devotional message, and a Reflect and Meditate section.

I especially love the illustrations - which are exceptionally lovely! - and the Reflect and Meditate messages in this book.  For instance:

"Reflection upon how this confession unites you with brothers and sisters across time, how we might be a living echo of God's unity" (p. 03).

and

"Consider His joy, and ponder what it might take to become as a child and enjoy His beauty" (p. 11).

This is such a thoughtful, substantive devotional book.  I find it truly exceptional and unique!  I recommend it highly to other readers who are looking for a beautiful, thought provoking contemplative journey for 40 days.

Book Synopsis

Discover deeper faith as you explore the richness of Christian belief and tradition with a visually inspired journey through the Nicene Creed.

“We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth….”

In Heaven Meets Earth, philosopher-artist Josh Nadeau, creator of Sword and Pencil, invites you to explore the Nicene Creed in this 40-day devotional journey of transformation for everyday saints. With his iconographic-style art and his insightful words, Josh brings the traditional to the present day in this visually inspired exploration of the faith.

Each daily entry of this spiritual journey includes:

  • A short phrase from the Creed to meditate on
  • Thoughtful reflections on what the words still mean today
  • A beautiful piece of full-color art inspired by the Creed
  • A dedicated prayer to bring your thoughts to God

Whether during the Lent season or any time of the year, step into an ancient, living faith with Heaven Meets Earth, and embrace the beauty of belief with Josh’s stunning visual art alongside this historic Christian confession of faith. Book Review and Giveaway - Just Desserts and Murder: A Temperance Matthews Cozy Mystery (Little Bakery Cozy Mystery Series) by Lucinda Race

My Review

Just Desserts and Murder is the start of a new cozy series set in the small town of Oak Hollow. Temperance Matthews is a former FBI profiler turned bakery owner.  When her bakery burns - with a body found inside - Temperance works to solve the mystery.

I wanted to read Just Desserts because I love cozy mysteries, love baking, and especially love dachshunds.  This book features Temperance's' cute miniature dachshund, Hank.  The author definitely has the dachshund personality down perfectly!

This is a wonderful start for a new series.  I like the fact that Temperance has a strong detecting background (FBI) and has chosen to work as a baker.  Those two worlds blend perfectly in this mystery.

The book is well paced, with several mystery surprises - as well as likable characters and dialogue that moves the story along well.

I recommend Just Desserts and Murder for other fans of cozy mysteries.  I look forward to reading upcoming books in this new series!

Book Synopsis

In Oak Hollow, every recipe comes with a dash of mystery…

Temperance Matthews thought opening her dream bakery in Oak Hollow—with her mini dachshund, Hank, at her heels—would be a sweet start to her new life. Instead, her shop goes up in flames, and a body is found among the ashes.

When her quiet assistant Louise shows up bruised, with twigs in her hair, and missing a shoe, Temperance’s data-analysis skills from her FBI days suddenly feel like the only hope of untangling the mystery. But the plot thickens: Jonah, the bakery’s former owner, is stabbed while trying to reach Temperance. The frosting on the cake? Louise’s boyfriend is the victim of the fire. Surveillance footage shows him entering through a locked back door—yet only three keys exist, and Louise doesn’t have one.

With threats mounting and the police closing in on a suspect, Temperance must follow a trail of half-baked clues before the real culprit turns her cozy little town into a crime scene… and who becomes the next target.

Just Desserts and Murder is Book 1 in the exciting new Little Bakery Cozy Mystery Series featuring Temperance Matthews. Each book can be read as a standalone.

Book Review - Uncomplicate It by Hosanna Wong

My Review

Uncomplicate It is a book about breaking down barriers that keep believers from growing close to God.  I love the line in the book synopsis:  "A real relationship with God is not one-size-fits-all."  Yes!  That is a perfect tagline for this book.

I wanted to read this book because it sounded so inspiring.  I had never read Hosanna Wong before and was interested in her writing.

Uncomplicate It is divided into four parts:

  1. This Is Your Permission Slip
  2. Roadblocks
  3. Shortcuts
  4. The Great Uncomplicating
I love how down to earth Hosanna Wong's writing is, with stories and examples involving real people.  For example:

"I had no idea how important beauty could be to some people's walks with God until I heard from one specific group of friends - painters, writers, photographers - all bonded by their love for art. ... My new friend who is a watercolor artist talked about the beauty of a specific flower.  A friend who is a graphic designer talked about the beauty of certain paintings he'd seen that week.  And a jewelry maker shared some of the most poetic prose about a small pond surrounded by flowers that she's passed - how it reminded her of certain scriptures and pointed her toward God" (p. 138).

This is a great book to read, to re-read, and to share.  I intend to recommend it to several friends!

Book Synopsis

What if enjoying life with God is simpler than you’ve heard? What if your personality, the way you learn, the things you enjoy, your season of life, and your many roles aren’t roadblocks to overcome but instead shortcuts to real connection with your Creator? International speaker Hosanna Wong offers you a permission slip to uncomplicate your relationship with God and enjoy Him in your own unique way.

She will help you:

  • break free from unrealistic expectations that do not come from God;
  • overcome 6 roadblocks that keep you from enjoying your life and relationship with God;
  • unlock 6 shortcuts to enjoying God in your current season;
  • learn from interviews with over one thousand believers about their unique ways of encountering God; and
  • drop the guilt, shame, and comparison that comes from the lie that your relationship with Jesus must look one certain way, or else.

A real relationship with God is not one-size-fits all. Your relationship with God does not have to look like anyone else’s. And it doesn’t have to look the same way it did years ago. You can uncomplicate it. This is your permission slip to embrace the unique way God has made you, in this specific stage of life you’re in, so that you can fully receive all the good that God has for you right now.
