Irish Meadows is a historical novel set in Long Island, New York in 1911. It is the story of two sisters. Brianna and Colleen O'Leary grew up on a horse farm. Their father was an Irish immigrant and the sisters have family pressure to marry prominent, prosperous men. However, Brianna wants to go to college. The sisters also find that there are two special men in the picture: Gilbert Whelan, a former stable hand, and Rylan Montgomery, a seminary student.
Initially, I found Brianna a much more sympathetic character. I usually prefer stories of intelligent, ambitious women, and I appreciated her desire to go to college. As the book went on, I did come to like Colleen as well. All the characters were well developed, and the dialogue (especially well written) moved the story along.
The historical details in this book are interesting, and the author evokes a nice sense of time and place. I really like novels set in the early 1900's.
This is inspirational fiction and the characters' faith in God played a major role in their lives. Fans of historical fiction and historical romance will enjoy this heartwarming novel.
