Patients at a posh Boca Raton rehab
center are ending up stiffer than a Boca babe’s smile. Tough PI Harriet
Horowitz, once a bedazzled babe herself, signs in at The Oasis at the
request of a frightened friend.
As a pattern emerges in the murders,
it’s clear the killer is targeting patients with an unusual addiction.
How did they end up with the same drug problem at the same time and in
the same rehab together? Harriet’s sleuthing leads her down a path of
secrets and danger, and what she learns could lead her undercover
assignment to a dead end.

When did you realize you wanted to be a
writer?
I wrote essays in high school that won a few
contests, but I didn’t pursue fiction writing until I was in my forties. One day a few years
back, I found myself in a funk. I took to bed to eat chocolates and stare at
the TV. A Dirty Harry movie marathon was
on. The character, played by Clint Eastwood, was the archetype of the strong,
silent hero. I had never really
understood Harry’s appeal. But suddenly I had a vision of him as a woman, and
it all made sense. I asked myself, why
is it socially acceptable for a man to be the strong silent type, but not a
woman? I decided what the
world needed was a Dirty Harriet – so I created her and wrote my debut novel of
the same name. It won the Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Award for Best First
Series Novel, proving it’s never too late to embark on a successful writing
career.
What was your favorite book as a child?
A
Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. Its message of the triumph of love over
evil, wrapped in a sci-fi space-time travel story, was entertaining,
comforting, and wonderfully inspiring.
What is your writing day like? Do you
have any interesting writing quirks?
I’ve often heard that if you want to be a
writer, you need to sit your butt in a chair and write. Unfortunately, I’ve often sat … and stared
into space. That advice just doesn’t
work for me. So now, I write when I have
something to say. I don’t have a
regimented schedule. My quirks are that
I have one special pen that just “feels” right to me, and I write my first
drafts in longhand. Also, I write in bed!
What was the most surprising thing you
learned while creating this book?
I have to say the power of the subconscious
always surprises me while writing. It’s
amazing how plot points, characters, clues, red herrings, and funny lines
spring to mind, seemingly out of nowhere.
Who are your favorite authors?
Janet Evanovich, J.D. Robb, Sara Paretsky, and Sue
Grafton. They all feature strong, smart, funny heroines in mystery series.
What is your next writing project?
I’m plotting my next Dirty Harriet mystery,
which will be the fifth in the series. Harkening back to my love of A Wrinkle in Time, in this one I’m
killing off a rocket scientist (and then Harriet solves the case, of course, so
once again good vanquishes evil!)

Thanks so much for the interview - it was fun!
Thanks for the interview, and thanks for stopping by! - Trish
I've read Boca Undercover and Dead in Boca and enjoyed them both. They're a quick read, good for the summer when you don't want anything "heavy" to read.
I liked a Wrinkle in Time as a kid too (and I still do!)
excited about this.
Cozy mysteries are my favorite genre!
I would love to read this book—thanks for the chance to win a copy!
