Book Review and Giveaway: The Ghosts of Peppernell Manor by Amy M. Reade

The Ghosts of Peppernell Manor Publisher: KENSINGTON (April 28, 2015) E-BOOK 250 Pages ASIN: B00OEW5SR0 goodreads-badge-add-plus

“Do you know what stories Sarah could tell you about the things that happened in these little cabins? They’d curl that pretty red hair of yours.”

Outside of Charleston, South Carolina, beyond hanging curtains of Spanish moss, at the end of a shaded tunnel of overarching oaks, stands the antebellum mansion of Peppernell Manor in all its faded grandeur. At the request of her friend Evie Peppernell, recently divorced Carleigh Warner and her young daughter Lucy have come to the plantation house to refurbish the interior. But the tall white columns and black shutters hide a dark history of slavery, violence, and greed. The ghost of a former slave is said to haunt the home, and Carleigh is told she disapproves of her restoration efforts. And beneath the polite hospitality of the Peppernell family lie simmering resentments and poisonous secrets that culminate in murder—and place Carleigh and her child in grave danger…

My Review
As a lifelong Southerner and a mystery fan, I knew I would enjoy The Ghosts of Peppernell Manor.

The book has a fine sense of place, and captures the area outside Charleston very well.  It was very interesting to read about the protagonist's work restoring the interior of Peppernell Manor.

Carleigh is a likable, independent character.  I enjoyed getting to know her in this novel.  This book in many ways is a chick lit, about Carleigh's life after divorce.

From the title of the book and the description, I thought the ghost story would be a central part of the plot.  I enjoyed this read, but it did turn out to be more of a light mystery/chick lit book rather than a Southern ghost story.  That said, I think that fans of cozy mysteries and chick lit stories will enjoy this book, especially if they like a Southern setting.

I just discovered this author yesterday and look forward to reading The Ghosts of Peppernell Manor. This would be the first book that I read that involves ghosts, but I do love cozy mysteries. Thanks for the chance.

Thanks, Rachael. The ghosts in the book are really more metaphorical, though there are two characters who believe in one particular ghost. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!
