Interview with Suzanne de Montigny

What inspired you to write this book?
The truth be told, I wrote the first version of it when I was 11 years old. It was supposed to be a class project to write a ‘story’. I got carried away and wrote an entire novella. Then years later, I found it in an old box as I was cleaning the basement and threw it in the blue box. Then, a couple of days later, I thought I should at least read it. Of course, being in Vancouver, by this time, it had been rained upon, so I had to dry it out first. When I finally read it, I was floored and knew I had to do a full novel-length version of it. That one book grew to three. The Shadow of the Unicorn II: The Deception, is the second of the trilogy. The Shadow of the Unicorn: The Legacy is the first. The inspiration? I just love horses.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
I get up at the crack of dawn, write before my two boys have to get up, write after I drop them off at school, and then when I pick them up again, it’s all about them.

What is your favorite thing about writing?
I tell people it’s like reading a really good book except you’re writing it. I’m a pantser, so I don’t usually know what’s going to happen until I write it. Then the characters take over and I’m pulled and yanked along by them.

Who are your favorite authors?
Lucy Maude Montgomery, Kurt Vonnegut, Amy Tan, and Kit Pearson.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
My two boys and I are avid violinists. We especially like fiddling. But we also love snowboarding. Then there’s Buddy the dog.

What is your next writing project?
I’m about four chapters into the third of The Shadow of the Unicorn trilogy. This one is called The Revenge, and the bad guy is a unicorn! I also have recently completed a teen paranormal novel called A Town Bewitched that I’ve submitted. Keeping my fingers crossed.
